Starting Out

I don't know how often I will update this blog. I am going to try to update at least once a week. I may talk about what started us looking into what was going on with Ben, or it may be just me talking about how I deal with his little outbursts that usually happen on a daily basis.

Let me tell you about Benjamin.  He is 3 1/2 years old.  A bright boy with beautiful ice blue eyes, and dark blonde curls.  My youngest child, he is adored sometimes tolerated by his 3 older sisters.

Right before Christmas my son was diagnosed with moderate/High-funtioning Autism.  We have been working on getting this diagnosis for about a year.  I am just thankful for a preschool teacher who saw that there was something just not right in the way he was acting in class.  To her I say "Thank You, Amy!"  Relief, that was the feeling that I had when the diagnosis was given to us.  It was a relief to know that autism is what made him act different from other children his age.

Luckily for us his dianosis came through the local school system.  Which means that the school system was ready to help him get the therapy he needs.  They informed us that they would place him into one of the local elementary schools special education program.  All we had to do was to wait for the phone call telling us which school he would be placed.  That was on a Thursday.  On Friday morning we got the call that he had been placed.  Less than an hour later his new teacher called to get to know us, and ask us questions about Ben.  She also said that he would be starting as soon as Christmas break was over.  Wow, the school system worked fast to get him started!

Just writing up this little bit, I've had to stop several times to calm him down, or to get him back on task.
